I’d just gotten off the phone with my sister and I’d even been bragging about how Nolan was the perfect roommate. Then I heard two sets of footsteps out on the front porch. I thought it was pretty odd…Nolan never brought company home. In fact, he hadn’t even dated anyone since Heather passed away…three years ago. That was until he brought HER home for dinner tonight. Her name was Alice and they’d met when she brought her laptop in to be fixed. Nolan began preparing fish tacos while Alice talked about how she’d felt an instant connection to him as soon as their eyes made contact. I sat next to her and listened to her babble on. After we ate, Nolan and I headed into the living room to set a game up…while Alice cleaned up the kitchen then proceeded to mop our already clean floors. “Babe, you don’t have to do that.” Nolan called over to her. “Come join us for a few rounds of Mortal Kombat…I’ll let you win.” He said sweetly. I rolled my eyes as she giggled. “As soon as I’m done, honey.” She replied just as sweetly. I sighed and shook my head. Was she seriously more OCD than Nolan himself? “Maybe that was the connection she’d felt.” I thought to myself and rolled my eyes again. Why was I acting this way? Green definitely was not my color…

Mom quickly went and got dressed before coming to my room. She crossed her arms and stared at me. “I’m waiting.” I nodded and took my robe off. She gasped when she saw my scaly legs. “How long have they looked like this? And why didn’t you tell me, Chelsea?” I squirmed under her gaze. “Nearly two months. I guess I was embarrassed and that’s why I didn’t show you sooner. I’m really sorry.” I muttered while looking at the floor. “I went to the doctor. She still hasn’t called me about my results. Now that I know what it is…I hope she loses my paperwork or something.” Mom sat heavily on the bed and groaned. “Oh no. Noooo.” I sat down beside her. “I guess that was a stupid idea, right?” I put my head in hands and sighed. “What am I going to do?” Mom reached and touched my arm. “Whatever happens next, we’ll get through it together. As a family. And I’m going to tell your Dad everything.” I nodded. “Good thinking.” I stood up and put my robe back on. When I turned around, Mom locked me into a tight hug. “I love you, Chels. No matter how old you get, you’re always going to be my baby. And I’ll do whatever it takes to protect you. I promise.” She whispered fiercely into my ear. I believed her…

Back when she graduated high school, Blake received a lot of money from our distant relatives and friends. Even Chad’s parents sent a rather large check. And that was the first and last time she ever heard from them, by the way. She called it bad money…and said they were just paying her off and hoping she wouldn’t come back asking for more. But still, Blake took the all the simoleons she’d gotten and opened her own bakery. It was probably the wisest investment she could’ve ever made. She makes the best baked goods in town…and I’m not saying that because she’s my sister. They are the crème de la crème…just ask her customers. I’m proud of her. She struggled to get where she is now but she worked hard and never let being a single mother bring her down. She even recently started dating again…but I’m not sure how I feel about it for two reasons. 1) She’s his boss. He could just be sucking up for a promotion. 2) I’ve heard whispered gossip around town about the guy. Rumor is…he’s married. But that’s none of my business…

“Seriously, Mom…mermaids?” I asked while raising a skeptic eyebrow. “Let me get this straight: You were a mermaid that made a deal with a witch to become human so that you could be with Dad? And Finneas is your neurotic merman brother who wanted you to be his personal slave? And you still don’t know what the witch wanted as part of the deal or when she’s going to show up to ask for it. And…I’m a mermaid too?” She grunted and made a face. “Well, I’m not sure if you are. But when you put it like that it all sounds pretty crazy. Actually it’s insane. Except it’s all true.” I got up and went to the coffee maker. “I’m going to need more caffeine.” I said irritably. She came in behind me and pulled the milk and sugar out. Then she followed me to the dining table where she watched me drink in silence. “I know discussing all of this makes us sound certifiable…and as much as I dislike admitting it…I believe you, Mom. It’s the only explanation I have for what’s been happening to my body.” I looked up at her from my cup. Without skipping a beat, she demanded that I show her…

Living with Nolan has it’s pros and cons but for the most part, it’s great. I do the cooking, he does the cleaning…he’s a bit OCD so our place stays pristine. When we’re both home at the same time, we have game night! He works a lot though and sometimes I go whole days without seeing him. He’s works at a computer repair company. It’s a cool job and he really seems to enjoy it. But it was surprising…I figured he would’ve ended up working for NASA or something. No kidding. He’s the smartest person I’ve ever met. When we were little we made a bet to see who would get to space first. I always thought it would’ve been him. Seems silly now. Big dreams for small children…

I tossed and turned that night, trying to sleep. But eventually I was awoken by yet another nightmare…this time I remembered bits and pieces. The guy from the beach was there. Finneas. I had the oddest feeling about him. I felt like I knew him from somewhere. I closed my eyes again, thinking. He looked so familiar…then it clicked. I sat up in bed. How did I not see it before? He had the same fair skin. The same green eyes. The same pale blond hair. We were related. Somehow…

I went downstairs and found my mother in the kitchen. “Ice cream for breakfast?” I giggled. “The baby wants what the baby wants.” Mom said with a shrug. I plopped down onto the barstool next to her and glanced at her from the corner of my eye. She seemed like she was in a good mood…I would hate to ruin it. But I had to know. “Mom…is Finneas my real father?” The spoon dropped from her hand and hit the counter with a loud clank. She cleared her throat then looked at me. “I guess it’s time for you to know the truth. I can’t lie anymore…”

Three years later and I’ve finally got my own place. I did a few years at an IT college but dropped out to begin my career. In fact, I start my new job at Future Sims Labs next week. Nolan is still my best friend and we share a house right down the road from the trailer park I grew up in. It’s pretty awesome having him as my roommate.

I stop by Dad’s house everyday to check in with everyone. Blake still lives with Dad along with her son, Chase. He looks a lot like Chad. And he’s the cutest little stinker ever. Dad hasn’t changed much…still obsessed with his projects and inventions. He’s been building something in the backyard for years now…I wonder if he’ll ever finish it.

The days came and went. But the time that I spent waiting for my test results were the longest two weeks of my life. I went to the park near my parents’ house after class. It was the third week and still I’d heard nothing from my doctor. Usually that’s a good sign, right? I sat on the swings and kicked at the dirt underneath my feet. I was pretty down in the dumps when I realized that someone was sitting in the swing next to me. I looked over at him and said, “Hi.” He waved back at me shyly. Then I noticed his feet were bare. “Where are your shoes?” I asked politely. “I don’t have any.” He shrugged. “You look like you could use a friend.” He said with a gentle smile. I sighed. “Yeah. I’m having a tough time. Was it really that obvious?” He nodded. “How about a push?” He asked. “Sure. Thanks.” He pushed me on the swings until it got dark, then he had to go home. I didn’t even think to ask for his name until he was already gone…

It was a long hot summer. Oasis Springs is a small town and there were limited things to do. Blake wasn’t due until the next month but she never felt like going anywhere. So we stuck around the trailer park we lived in. And I did whatever she asked of me. It was a bit boring at times…I felt like her servant instead of her sister every now and then, but I’d promised to help her. Unfortunately, I was hanging out with Nolan less and less…because I felt like Blake needed me. I sure did miss him though. School was going to start back in a few weeks and I was kinda glad. I missed my teachers, I missed Paul, and I was excited to start my new classes. Blake is thinking about going to college after her baby is born…Dad and I agree that it’s a great idea. Whatever the future holds…I think we’ll be ready for it.
