It was the night after Mary’s funeral, Mom had went to bed early and Dad was working late at the office. Madison and I were both reading in bed, when I realized how thirsty I was. I quietly got up and went down the hall to the bathroom for a glass of water. As I was making my way back to my room, I heard a muffled scream and the sound of something breaking. I ran to Mom’s room and threw the door open. She was in a struggle with a masked man. Mom screamed “Get your sister and run!” Then she jumped on the intruder’s back and began hitting him on the head repeatedly. “Maddie!” I cried while running down the hallway as fast I could. Our bedroom door opened before I reached it and she snatched me by the hand then pulled me into the closet. Putting her finger to her lips, she pulled out her cell phone and dialed Sheriff Gallagher’s number. “It’s Madison Casey, there’s a burglar in our house. Please come quick!” She whispered pleadingly. The few moments we were hidden in the closet seemed like an eternity. In the distance we heard a car squeal away. We crept down the stairs and ran out the front door where we met the Sheriff who was just arriving. I flung myself into his arms. “We were so scared. Thank you for coming.” He patted me on the head and told us to wait outside while he checked the house out. When he came back out to us, his face was unreadable. But we already knew what he needed to tell us. Mom was gone…
