WW End

Eli loves the ocean. To our surprise, he learned to swim at a really early age. Lauren and I jokingly call him our little fishboy. Speaking of fish, he enjoys fishing with me on the weekends as well. And when he’s a little older, I plan to take him sailing with me. I think he’s going to grow up to have a lot of the same interests I did as a child. But I won’t lie…it kind of worries me when I see him staring at the ocean so intensely. Almost as if he’s lost in a thought. Or when he babbles incoherently to the water’s edge…like he knows someone or something is out there. I’m positive that the threat is gone but it just makes me wonder. And I know I should be afraid after everything I’ve been through and everything I’ve seen but I can’t help how I feel…I’m still in love with the sea. The salt in the air, the warm sand beneath my feet, the breeze blowing across my skin. It’s like an old friend. I look over at Eli and see him cautiously digging his toes beneath the sand. He notices me staring so I give him a gentle smile and I say, “There’s nothing to be scared of…I’ll always keep you safe.” And I will…for as long as I live. I sit down next to him, snuggle him close, and we both watch the waves come rolling in. And we listen. Because sometimes, if we listen closely enough…we can hear the ocean speak. Softly…quietly…a song no one else can hear. A whisper from the waters…

The End.

Over the years the whole family eventually migrated to Hylewood…now we’re all within minutes of each other. Mom and Dad are great. There were a few hiccups along the way (they had a bit of trouble getting new identities…since they’re legally dead and all) but they managed to get through it. Nowadays things are pretty normal. We try to see them as much as we can. Cookouts, picnics, double dates…you name it. Dad and Owen have a bit of bromance but would never admit to it. I’m glad they’re close though. My mom is definitely my best friend. They still happily live next door to Grandma. My uncle and Aunt are also doing well and live on the other side of town with my childhood pets. I’ve finally let go of the anger that I had about my uncle’s secrecy while I was kid and our relationship has been repaired. We’re even closer now than we were before. Ann moved in next door to me…it was a welcome surprise. She married Paul from college (no surprise there) and they have an adorable little girl named May. May and Eli are only 8 months apart and are going to be best friends, I’m sure of it. Every Sunday, my whole family gets together for dinner at Grandma’s house…it’s a tradition. I suppose no family is perfect…but ours comes pretty damn close. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the whole world.

It’s been three years since Eli was born and the events from our past no longer haunt us. Sometimes I like to think that maybe it was all just a bad dream that my whole family happened to wake up from…wishful thinking I suppose. Anyways, life has been pretty great. I recently graduated from the Police Academy and I’m now a Patrol Officer. There isn’t a lot of crime in Hylewood which makes my job easier…but I sincerely enjoy what I do. Owen and my dad opened their own construction company…Waters Building Co. Our days are long but being able to come home to each other and Eli makes it all worth it.

On a warm August day, shortly after baby Eli was born, I married my soulmate. Our family cheered us on as we exchanged our vows. We were pronounced Mr. and Mrs. Michaels and then we kissed. Everyone clapped and whistled…even Eli was cooing along. We then turned to face the crowd around us. Dad made us stand still so he could take a million pictures of us. (I’m exaggerating of course.) Then he and Owen disappeared for a while…they were off smoking a celebratory cigar, I’m sure. Mom cried a lot. She swore they were tears of joy and that she was just so happy that she was here on my special day. She said Owen’s parents would’ve been thrilled to have me as a daughter in law. Turns out my mom had been friends with his mom during college. It’s a small world after all. I caught Mom wiping her eyes and holding her hands over her heart more than once during the reception. It was an emotional day for her. I just wish my grandparents from her side of the family could’ve been there too. But other than that, it really was the perfect day…

It was late Spring when Owen brought me over to my parents’ house. Mom and Dad were standing in the yard, waiting for us. They both had mischievous smiles on their faces. They along with Owen had been acting very secretive over the past three weeks and my hormones had just about had enough of it. “Okay, we’re here. Now can someone please tell me what’s going on?” I whined and stamped my foot. “Aww Lee.” Mom said in a soothing tone. “Sounds like someone needs lunch.” I shrugged. Food would’ve definitely made me feel better. “Well we have some great news!” My dad announced. “We sold the house!” I gasped in shock. “What? No! You spent all that time fixing it up…just to sell it?” I looked up at the house with a frown. “Where are you going to live now?” I asked. “We found a smaller place next door to your grandmother. It’s just the two of us…we don’t need all that space.” My dad replied still smiling. “But you do.” I raised my eyebrow and said, “Are you saying what I think you’re saying?” He laughed in response. “Yes! You and Owen are the new owners!” I couldn’t believe it. I grinned and placed my hands over my stomach. “You hear that Eli? We have a nice big home now!” Owen walked over and put his arm around me. “They hated that we lived so far from them. This way we’ll all be in walking distance of each other. And they’ll never miss another moment of your life. Or their grandson’s.” I nodded in agreement. “Best idea ever.” I said while kissing his cheek.

“Hmmm. It’s not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.” My mom said while looking up at our family home. Dad grunted in disagreeance. I gave her a skeptical look and said “Really? But Mom…the roof is caving in.” She laughed. “But it can be fixed! It all can be fixed! Right honey?” She asked my father with a twinkle in her eye. He sighed. “Well…can’t really tell from out here. Let’s see what the inside looks like first.” They paused in front of the door, both lost in thought. I’m sure they were remembering how it’d been before. “See honey. We can fix it. Together.” She said with a knowing smile. He looked over at her and nodded. “Absolutely darling.” She grinned with excitement. “We can patch the roof, put down new floors, install new windows, paint the walls…maybe get some new tile for the kitchen and bathrooms?” Mom was making a list. Dad’s eyes grew big and he looked worried for a moment. “That sounds like a lot of work babe. At this rate, it’ll be quite a while before anyone can move in here.” He said in a cautious tone. “Don’t worry Dad. Owen can lend a hand!” I suggested. “It’ll give ya’ll time to get to know each other too.” He snorted and said, “I suppose I could use the help.” And within six months, the house looked like it did twenty years ago…

We had Christmas dinner at my Grandma’s house. Mom and Dad were staying with her for the time being…since their house wasn’t exactly in living conditions. The mood was light and merry. Everyone was happy and smiling. Digging into the delicious meal in front of me, I thought back to my doctor visit from yesterday. Having a sea witch cast spells on your body kinda makes one worry. But I was in better health that I could have imagined. And there was something else. And I couldn’t wait to share my good news with my family. After we were all done eating, we went into the living room to exchange gifts. I pulled Owen in front of the Christmas tree and smiled up at him. “Now’s the time.” I whispered. He nodded and pulled me close. “We have something we’d like to tell everyone.” Owen announced. I grinned and blurted out, “We’re pregnant!”
